Books & Resources

A short, 3 week course, that provides ideas and practise in building active online courses. The course is built around Gilly Salmon's proven 5 step model of E-Moderating, provides feedback to participants on their own e-tivities, helps build skills in participants so that student groups~can collaborate effectively.

If participation in your online events has been disappointing to date; if you are new to building online events; or if you simply wish to deepen the knowledge and skills you built up through the ‘E-Moderating’ course, then this ‘E-Tivities’ course is for you.

The cost of the course is $275 US and requires about 5 hours per week of time. Each course offering is limited in size to 15 students.

Introduction to the Course

The course is entirely remote and asynchronous, so you can log in and take part when you like from where you like. The course is paced and based on a cohort of participants working together so it is important to have regular access to a networked computer throughout the period of time. However, it works best if you can log in most days, even if only for a short time.

You will also benefit if, beyond that direct time commitment, you regularly review and reflect on the ideas and issues thrown up by the course - both your own and those of other participants, and explore their application to your every day working and teaching.

The online course is divided into 3 sessions over 3 weeks. As a participant in the course you will be expected to take part in a number of online activities and reflect regularly and systematically on your progress.
We recommend that you purchase a copy of Gilly Salmon's book 'E-tivities' to help you along.

Aims and Objectives of the Course

The purpose of the course is to:

• Enable you to build successful online learning events by providing you with the skills to create effective online activities (e-tivities).

Course Outline

The course is based on Gilly Salmon's latest book (Salmon, 2002, E-tivities - The key to Active Online Learning, Kogan Page London & Stylus Publishing in the US). Like the foundation course, 'E-moderating', E-tivities continues to draw on her five-step model. You can view the model in the course description for E-moderating.
By the end of the course, you will have increased your understanding of asynchronous learning environments, have a better grasp of the 5-step model as a scaffold for learning events and be able to design E-Tivities that facilitate individual and group learning online. You will do this both through experiencing E-Tivities in action as a participant and by designing E-Tivities; through asynchronous online discussions with fellow participants and the e-convenor to develop your understanding; and by regular and systematic reflection on your progress.

The course is organised over 3 weekly sessions:
• Introduction and Session 1 – Getting the group of learners together.

• Session 2 – Encouraging collaboration and developing online skills

• Session 3 – Developing an online event
